Engineer Your World: Welcome & New School Checklist

Dear Colleague,

On behalf of the Engineer Your World (EYW) program at The University of Texas at Austin, I am pleased to congratulate you and your team on your demonstrated commitment to engineering education. Based on the information that you provided in your online enrollment form, we believe that your campus will be an ideal partner in the Engineer Your World network. This innovative partnership includes:

  • The National Science Foundation (NSF) and its Math-Science Partnership (MSP) program, which fully funded the development of Engineer Your World as part of a $12.5M MSP grant (2008-16);
  • The Cockrell School of Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin, one of the top engineering programs in the United States, whose faculty members serve as subject matter experts for Engineer Your World and oversee the dual enrollment course for which your students will now be eligible;
  • An International Network of Schools that brings Engineer Your World to more than 10,000 high school students on ~160 campuses in 26 states and South Korea.

We are committed to working with all of our partners to ensure that our curriculum, professional development, and teacher support programs are of the highest caliber. We look forward to collaborating with you and your team to bring high-quality, low-cost, design-based engineering to your students and to students across the nation.

Sincerely,

David T. Allen, Ph.D., P.E.

New School Onboarding Checklist

1. Review and Execute the Services Agreement and Copyright License Agreement

The appropriate school administrator must execute the services agreement that outlines terms and conditions of implementation:

  • By signing the agreement, schools commit to offering the curriculum for a minimum of three years.
  • All teachers must attend our professional development institute for each course they will be instructing prior to teaching the curriculum.

The agreement will be sent directly to the contract administrator listed on the enrollment form. Please ensure the agreement is signed and returned to us by the deadline noted in the email.

2. Verify/Identify your Engineer Your World Teacher(s)

Please ensure we have received the name and email address of the teacher(s) who will be teaching the course. Send the instructor’s contact information (name, email address and telephone number) to Jennifer McHam at Jennifer.mcham@austin.utexas.edu. If there is a change or addition of teachers, please inform us as soon as possible, as it is a program requirement that all instructors complete our training prior to teaching the curriculum.

Please note:

  • We will contact the educator(s) with instructions on how to register for the summer PDI.
  • Teachers must register for a professional development session within two weeks of receiving registration information.

The fee for the PDI is $2,000 per teacher for EYW: Design; $2,000 per teacher for EYW: Computing; and $1,000 per teacher for EYW: Applications. Payment must be received prior to the first day of training (see below for more information).

3. Visit the Engineer Your World Resources Webpage for Partner Schools

This page is intended for administrators, counselors, accounting personnel, and teachers, and contains resources to help with student recruitment, includes information about course descriptions, dual enrollment, equipment, payment, teacher changes, and more. Access the Resources Webpage at the bottom left of our website or at this link: http://engineeryourworld.org/resources/ (Password: EYW#1utatx)

4. Recruit Students for the Course(s)

Student flyers, a student recruitment video, informational flyers for counselors, suggested course descriptions, plus other ideas for student recruitment strategies are available to assist in your student recruitment efforts. See the EYW Resources Webpage for more details (password: EYW#1utatx). For easy reference, we have listed a few course-specific recruiting resources below:

EYW: Engineering Design and Analysis (EYW: Design)

EYW: Engineering Applications of Computer Science (EYW: Computing)

  • Student Recruitment Flyer: Post this flyer in classrooms, hallways, and counselors’ offices.
  • Informational Flyer for Counselors: Share this flyer with counselors to explain how the course benefits all types of students. Meet with counselors to discuss what your particular school has decided regarding the course name, course code, dual enrollment, additional prerequisites (if applicable), and which graduation requirements the course fulfills.

EYW: Community Applications of Engineering Design (EYW: Applications)

See the EYW Resources Webpage for more details (password: EYW#1utatx).

5. Purchase Equipment and Supplies

We recommend purchasing kits of equipment and supplies through Studica’s website at https://www.studica.com/engineer-your-world-2 since they have organized kits for each of our courses at discounted rates. Depending on your school inventory, you may need to procure additional supplies, as items such as basic office supplies, goggles, calipers, etc. are NOT included in the kits. A list of equipment and supplies needed for EYW course(s) (notating both the items included and not included in the kits) may be found on the EYW Resources Webpage.

Although kits are available for purchase year-round, schools typically purchase course materials in the late spring or in the summer. Note, if you purchase a kit of materials through Studica, payment will go directly to Studica. See the EYW Resources Webpage for more information (password: EYW#1utatx).

6. Remit Payment to Engineer Your World by the Requested Deadlines

We will send invoices twice a year as follows:

  1. Professional Development Invoice. Once the Professional Development registration is received and confirmed, the invoice will be sent to the accounting contact specified on your enrollment form. This typically occurs in the spring or early summer, but will depend on when teacher registration occurs. Please note, it is the responsibility of the school or district to pay for or reimburse teachers for travel, meals and housing costs related to Professional Development, if applicable.
  • Annual Curriculum Licensing Invoice. The annual Curriculum Licensing invoice will be sent in September. Please refer to your contract for the amount that your school or district will be billed each year.

If you have any questions, please contact Jennifer McHam at Jennifer.mcham@austin.utexas.edu. Thank you, and welcome to the Engineer Your World network!
